Stitch the Salwar

About this course

Most people make one kameez and three salwars. This is the one you'll come back to. The course is complete on its own: you draft the salwar pattern from your own measurements, cut the panels, gores, belt and cuffs, then stitch the whole thing. Making the belt that carries the drawstring. Forming the pleats at the waist — how many, how deep, and how to keep both sides even. Basting them in so a wrong pleat lifts out instead of ruining the waistband. Attaching the belt all the way round. Filling the cuffs with scrolling, on a straight machine or with your home machine's built-in zig-zag. Then the final inner seam, and the press that sets the crease so it hangs properly. Gaani films without cuts or edits — when a seam needs redoing, you watch her redo it. It's taught in Punjabi, the way a real tailor speaks, with English captions throughout. What's inside: • 14 lessons — 2 hours 4 minutes of video • Drafting and cutting included, so you don't need another course first • Both cuff methods — industrial scrolling and the home-machine zig-zag • A Punjabi stitching glossary in plain English All you need before you start are your measurements. If you don't have them yet, Gaani's course "Measure Like a Tailor" takes just over an hour.

What you'll learn

  • Draft a salwar pattern from any set of measurements — belt, aasan, godda and mohri
  • Cut the panels, gores, belt and cuffs accurately
  • Understand how the pieces join before you start the machine
  • Make the belt (nefa) that carries the drawstring
  • Form even pleats at the waist and know how many to use for a given size
  • Baste pleats so mistakes come out easily
  • Attach the belt cleanly all the way round
  • Attach cuffs and fill them with decorative scrolling
  • Use a home machine's zig-zag as the easy alternative — with exact settings
  • Close the inner leg seam to finish the salwar
  • Press it so the front crease sits properly

Requirements

  • Your body measurements — take the free "Measure Like a Tailor" course if you don't have them
  • A sewing machine, straight or domestic; both cuff methods are taught
